Bio

Debra Vogel is a NYC-based cabaret singer who is known for creating intimate and lively performances that envelop the audience in her unique warmth and humor. She has dubbed herself an "adult prodigy," because unlike many singers who started performing when they were children, Debra began singing and acting in her twenties.

The beginning

Debra’s first cabaret show was in 1987, with musical director John Williams, at Hi Techs Mex, a New York City restaurant that her sister-in-law generously transformed into a performance space just for Debra’s singing debut.  Several other shows followed (with the late Jeffrey Roy), including An Evening of Love with Debra Vogel and Love Addiction and Other Affairs of the Heart. Performing Arts Career

Over the next few years, Debra acted in various plays and musicals in NYC  before returning to her first love, cabaret. She had the great pleasure of teaming up with fellow singer and actor Brian Tom O’Connor to form the duo known as "O’Connor & Vogel." Together, they created three successful shows with musical director Darryl Curry: Guy & Doll; How to be Perfect; and Found & Lost, which they performed in and around New York City.

Solo Cabaret Performances

She then returned to creating solo shows which she has performed to sold out houses in and around New York City: Is It Now Yet?; Life, Love and All That Jazz; Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries; I Feel Lucky, and her latest show, It’s a Jungle Out There, all with her longtime, multi-talented musical director Darryl Curry.  Collaborating with Darryl and the rest of her creative team, director Elfin Vogel and choreographer Nora Brown, Debra approaches each song as a scene, creating a through line from beginning to end weaving the songs together to create a cohesive story and peopled by individual characters touching on both the serious and humorously absurd facets of life.

The future

Debra's most recent show, It’s a Jungle Out There, debuted in Rock Tavern and New Paltz, NY, and will migrate to NYC venues in spring 2023.  Debra is excited to share this new show and her signature wit and strong, versatile voice with her audiences as she explores the fickle nature of life and love and how we survive when the chips are down.
